How to Build Authority {and why you need to}


You’ve either got it or you have a problem with it. Actually that sounds more like my current household situation. I have authority and my kids have a problem with it.

Because truly, only the strictest of authoritarians would say you must cleanse your mud caked digits prior to indulging in your family meal. #sorrynotsorry.

But when it comes to working online, developing an authority is one awesome way to help your business grow. And this goes for bloggers and handmade business and infopreneurs... you name it, authority helps.

So what exactly do I mean when I say authority? You’ve probably heard the term a million times online but what does it truly mean?

An authority in business is someone that is in charge. They are knowledgable. They are experienced. They’re that person that you want to get advice from.

So yeah. You want it. And even more so, you want it because having authority or being an authority shows people that you are a trustworthy source.

Let’s talk about that for a minute. Everyone and their brother is trying to sell something online. Handmade businesses have their products to sell, coaches and consultants have services to sell, bloggers are “selling” their knowledge. I know that’s a tough one to wrap your mind around but truthfully bloggers are trying to gain readers. So while readers aren’t paying to visit a blog, a blogger is still trying to sell themselves to an audience.

And don’t even get me started on e courses. E courses from everyone! Even I have an e course.

So everyone has something to sell. And who are customers going to buy from? Not some random person that they know nothing about. They’re going to buy from a trustworthy source. Someone with authority.

You see what I’m getting at here, right?

Okay, so we’ve established that you want authority. Daresay, even need it to succeed in the hyper saturated online business world. But how on Earth do you do that? Don’t worry, friend. I’ve got you covered.

Find a specific niche.

This goes against the grain for what people want to hear, I know. We’re all such diverse people, we want to do all the things. I totally get that. During my time as an online entrepreneur, I had some growing pain in this particular arena. 5 years ago, when I opened my very first online business, I was selling... everything. Handmade toys. Home decor items. Even bath and body products. Want to know what happened? A big fat nothing. Because I was so random in my offerings that I didn’t have a strong presence in any one niche. I was diluted. My brand was diluted.

You want your brand to be maximum strength, my friend. So pick a niche.

Make your niche something you’re passionate about.

Okay. I probably don’t need to tell you this but I’m going to anyway. If you are trying to build your authority, whether you're a handmade business owner or a blogger, you need to make sure whatever niche you fall into is one that you absolutely love. If you pick something that you feel completely unenthused by, it’ll show. You won’t have that fire in you to go further and further and push for more.

And let me tell you... if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, other people will be too. There’s something so contagious about unadulterated joy in your job. Just saying.

Promote yourself, you super star!

If you’re in any online community, you’ve seen that glaring rule “No self promotion!” What this typically means is don’t go into a community, drop your link all willy nilly and jet. That’s icky. Seriously icky networking. But self promotion isn't about just dropping your links and sharing your offerings. It’s about getting involved! Making connections! When you’re online, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself in new communities. If someone asks a question that you know the answer to, help them out!

When you’re out in the real world, find ways to casually share what you do. For instance, you’re a mommy meet up. Diane is talking about how stressed she is about the busy week ahead. You have a whole section on your blog dedicated to freezer meals. Tell her how much you love freezer cooking to cut down on your busy time and let her know that she can grab your favorites on your website. Ta da! Self promotion. But you’re not being spammy; you’re providing value.

Stop trying to please everyone.

One thing that so many of us are guilty of is trying to make everyone everyone everyone like us. And it’s so hard to stop that mindset when you’re trying to grow a business. We get caught up in the numbers as if those follower counts define our success. They don’t. And you don’t really want EVERYONE to like your business. You want only the people that will be active in your business. AKA, your target market. So instead of worrying about EVERYONE, worry about making sure that your tribe likes you. Tailor to that market and it’s needs.

Avoid minimizing language.

This was a hard one for me to learn because of the way I talk. But I’m challenging you to try something. Any time you want to say “I just wanted to touch base with you.” or something of the sort, eliminate the word “just.” Try saying “I wanted to touch base with you.” The word "just" often invokes a certain feeling in people; and they don’t even realize it! The reason is that "just" makes it sound as though your are defending your reason for something, it comes across as less powerful. It’s a silly little thing but the truth is... it works. Dropping the just instantly makes you sound more confident.

Take ownership of your achievements and ideas.

It’s so easy to let others take the credit for things. You don’t want to be perceived as a bragger! But my friend, I’m telling you... there is nothing wrong with sharing your wins. Not at all! Sharing your accomplishments and taking credit for them shows that you are confident in what you’re doing and happy with it.

A happy business owner/blogger is far more appealing than a quiet one. Mostly because they’re visible.
