I'm completely nerding out with Darrell Vesterfelt this week, y'all. He's the Director of Growth with ConvertKit, so if you are a ConvertKit user, you've more than likely seen his name pop up in your inbox a time or two. Before he worked for ConvertKit, he was a user of the platform. We dive into the many features of the ConvertKit platform, but we also talk a lot about the value of email marketing for bloggers. Just FYI, all the links to ConvertKit in this post are my own referral link, so thanks for signing up through that link!

DISCOVERING THE CONVERTKIT PLATFORM

  • The ConvertKit platform came around at the right time to fill a need. The market was ready and ConvertKit was ready so, as Darrell says, it was the "perfect storm".
  • You shouldn't put all of your eggs in one basket, so while social media is good, it's fleeting. Email sits in your reader's inbox and allows you to communicate 1-on-1.
  • Think about writing your emails as connecting to another human.
  • Drip campaigns, or sequences in ConvertKit, allow you to time your communication based on the relationship you have with your subscribers. For example, you might communicate differently with a new readers as opposed to someone who has been a reader for a couple of years.
  • Our most engaged readers are reading about 50% of our content, so repurpose that content!
  • ConvertKit isn't for everybody. However, ConvertKit is for people who are serious about using email marketing to grow their revenue.
  • If you are looking for more simplicity, even if you're not trying to grow your revenue, ConvertKit is worth the $29/month starting price.
  • In ConvertKit, there is one master list, even if one person fills out 100 forms. Segments allow you to combine various forms, tags, and sequences into one segment. You can also exclude forms, tags, etc. from segments.
  • Link triggers allow you to do many cool things: tag someone interested in a specific product; tag someone not interested in a promotion without them having to completely unsubscribe; tag people based on their current needs.
  • Plain-text emails land in more primary inboxes rather than the promotional tab on Gmail, but they also feel more like an email from a person, which increases engagement.
  • You can still put links and images in ConvertKit emails. ConvertKit suggests no more than 2 images in an email, so it's important to be really strategic about the design of your email.
  • ConvertKit has an amazing affiliate program. They offer 30% of the accounts that you refer each month for the lifetime of the account.
