How to Create a Custom 404 Page (and keep readers hooked!)
Without a doubt, one of the most frustrating things that can happen online is trying to find a page only to get a 404 error page. You know the one. That page that says "This page no longer exists."
Want to know what's even more frustrating? When a potential customer, client or reader stumbles upon one on your site.
Honestly, this is an inevitable experience. Because people try to type in page addresses and make typos. Or they book marked a sales page from forever ago instead of your home page. Any number of reasons really. And most people will just click away when that happens. They don't think poorly of you as a business owner, they just move on.
But we don't want that. We want people to come to our page and stay. Which is why this week I'm going to show you how to take your boring and bland 404 page and turn it into a page that will keep your site viewers hooked.
For this lesson, you'll need a few things.
- A Self Hosted Wordpress (which I recommend to everyone anyway!)
- The Genesis Framework (the best. I love it.)
- The Genesis 404 Plugin (FREE!)
- The Content Views Plugin (also FREE!)
Setting up your custom 404 page is so so simple and I'm going to show you how in around 10 minutes. But here's the quick and dirty.
Install and activate Genesis 404 and Content Views. Create a Content View grid. You can set it up however you like, play with the settings to see which view suits your business and brand. Once you've created a grid, save it and copy the short code given.
The head to the 404 page section, which you can find by hovering over Genesis in your side bar. This will open up a page that looks a lot like putting together a post or regular page. Name your 404 page, add some text explaining that the content is no longer there and that maybe the viewer is looking for something else.
Then paste in the Content View short code, click save and woo-lah! Your 404 page is officially doing some heavy lifting.
Now the quick and dirty is great, but the video is better. Take 10 minutes to watch and get yours set up today.
And hey! Leave me a comment. I'd love to see your 404 page!
Until next time, have an amazing day!
