How to Create Social Media Templates using PicMonkey

I don't think there's any denying that social media can be a total time suck. And no... I'm not just talking about when you're lying in bed scrolling through all of your social media feeds.

What I'm actually talking about it maintaining your social media accounts as a blogger or business owner! It feels like there's always something you need to do. You have to post content. And regularly. You have to make sure that you're responding to comments. That you're engaging with others. That you're even creating original content for your social media!

It's a lot.

But there are some shortcuts you can take. Cheats, if you will.

Okay, we're going to call it a #bizhack. That sounds cooler. I love a good time saver and today I'm going to share one of my favorites with you.

Today, we're going to talk about creating social media templates so you can zip right through content creation.

And we're going to do it right in PicMonkey.

First things first. You're going to want to head over to PicMonkey and then click design. For social media images, you'll want pick the custom option. For this tutorial, I'll be putting together a Facebook template. But here are the social media measurements you want to have on hand.

  • Facebook - 1200 x 628
  • Instagram - 1080 x 1080
  • Twitter - 440 x 220
  • Pinterest - 735 x 1102

Whatever social media template you're creating, add in those measurements.

Once PicMonkey starts, you're going to be given an option to change the canvas color. Aka, the background color. Leave it white for now. It makes it easier to work with.

Next, go to the overlays option. If you don't know where that is, click the butterfly on the left side of the page. Then click "Add your own." You're going to want to select and image to put here so that you can make sure whatever template you create will work with actual pictures.

Resize the image to cover the entire canvas.

Now's when the fun starts! Using the overlay options, create different overlay layouts. You can pretty much do whatever you want here but the general rule of thumb is to keep it clean.

For this particular layout, I used a white rectangle, faded to 35%. I added a rectangle border in grey to the white and then a small pink rectangle. All super super fast.

Once you've figured out the general layout, you can make sure that it fits your branding! Change colors to suit your brand and if you have any fun branding elements, add them in. In this case, I added my favicon to the top corner. It makes this template unique to me. And, of course, I made sure my URL was added.

You absolutely want your URL added to templates in case people decide to share your images. Free potential traffic!

Okay, once you've got your layout all situated and you love it, delete that photo overlay! Now you can see your template on the white background. If there are any areas that look wonky, you can adjust them. If everything looks up to par, let's move on!

Okay, now we're going to repeat ourselves a bit. Reopen another custom design in the same size as the template you created.

Add your newly created template image as an overlay and resize it to fit the canvas you just opened.

Then click "Add to Hub."

This is where the magic kind of happens. This file will be saved in your PicMonkey Hub as an editable file. Meaning it won't be merged together. It will stay two separate layers. Which is the key here.

So now that you have the template created, you can put it to work!

Once your template opens, you can select the picture you want to use. Open it as an overlay, resize it to fit the template and then right click. When you right click the overlay, you'll be given a few options. In this case, you'll want to click "Send to back." This will put the image behind your template.

Then all you have to do is add your text over the top of everything and save the finished file to your computer. Make sure not to click "Update in Hub." If you do that, your template file will be saved over. And that's no fun! You want to be able to reuse that puppy!

So that's it! Templates seriously have saved me so much time and energy over the past few months.

Until next time, have a beautiful day!
