Double Your Impact: Social Media + Email

If you peruse the pages of Pinterest for blog tips & resources, you'll find plenty of blog posts about email marketing and social media separately, but rarely do you see tips for using them in tandem to double your impact and expand your reach.

But social media & email marketing are the BFFs of blog growth! They go together like peas and carrots, like sweet tea and sunshine, like bacon and syrup. (Ok maybe that last one is just me...) When used in conjunction with one another, you have the ability to reach your target audience where they are, build authenticity on all platforms, and share your content in multiple ways.

Today I want to break it down for you and show you how to Double Your Impact with Social Media & Email, happily together like Instagram & flat-lays!

We're going to start with social media, and to make things easy, I'm going to break it down by social media platform. We're going to cover the most popular platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Periscope.

FACEBOOK + EMAIL

I have a love/hate relationship with Facebook, but regardless of my feelings, there is no denying the mass amount of people on Facebook who could potentially become our loyal readers.

You have four places on your Facebook page in which to share a link to your sign-up form.

#1 - Call-to-Action button

Simply click the arrow to open a drop-down menu and edit the settings of your call-to-action to include a link to your sign-up form.

#2 - A Custom Tab

Similarly, add a custom tab. If you use the MailChimp platform for email, you can integrate your MailChimp account with Facebook, and MailChimp will put your sign-up form on your Facebook page automagically!

#3 - Facebook Header

Every image you upload to your Facebook page allows you to add a description. Be sure to add a blurb about your blog here, as well as a text link to your sign-up form.

#4 - Sidebar App

Take advantage of the space on the side of your Facebook page by adding links to your blog, other social media platforms, and your newsletter sign-up form!

BONUS TIP: Be sure you regularly schedule mentions of your newsletter to your Facebook page. This is particularly useful when you are introducing a new opt-in offer, or plan to share an exciting announcement with your email list.

IN YOUR NEWSLETTER: Occasionally include screenshots or conversations from Facebook in your newsletter. This will encourage subscribers to follow you there as well and become part of the conversation.

PINTEREST + EMAIL

So, when was the last time you wrote a blog post announcing your newsletter or killer opt-in offer? If the answer is "never", it's time to rethink your list growth strategies!

Pinterest is a massive traffic generator for most blogs, and if you're not turning those views from Pinterest into email subscribers, you can be missing out on some serious growth!

You could write a post about:

  • Your new and amazing opt-in offer
  • Details about the value you provide in your newsletter
  • Information about a private community you host
  • Sneak peeks at subscriber-only content or discounts (if you have products for sale)

Create a vertical graphic and remember to pin it on a regular basis to help people continue to find you and sign up for your newsletter.

IN YOUR NEWSLETTER: Use HTML to add some of your favorite pins from the week to your newsletter, or share a screenshot of an entire board. (Perfect for seasonal pinning!)

INSTAGRAM + EMAIL

Instagram is all about creating visual interest in your brand, and your newsletter is part of that. Create a custom bitly link for your sign-up form that you can use on Instagram to track clicks, then occasionally share a photo on Instagram talking about your newsletter.

Give a teaser about what's to come and tell people to click the link in your profile to sign up!

IN YOUR NEWSLETTER: Create an Instagram challenge & keep your email subscribers updated with images from the community, encouraging them to participate.

TWITTER + EMAIL

Twitter has become my favorite social media platform for making amazing connections with other bloggers in my niche, but it's also a great tool to use to build your email list.

The obvious tip here is to schedule tweets that link to your sign-up form, but you can go so much deeper:

  • Pin one of your tweets about your newsletter to the top of your Twitter profile. (Be sure to change it frequently, and don't forget the URL of your sign-up form!)
  • Create a hashtag for your brand or newsletter & include it in your Twitter bio. The hashtag is clickable, which allows you to build brand recognition over time.
  • If you write a really epic newsletter, consider tweeting it for your Twitter followers to see, like a free sample before signing up.

IN YOUR NEWSLETTER: Include a "tweetable" using Click-to-Tweet, encouraging subscribers to share your knowledge with their followers.

PERISCOPE + EMAIL

Yes, you really can grow your email list using Periscope! Because Periscope syncs with Twitter, your Periscope title becomes a tweet. Create a custom bitly link for Periscope & add it to your titles!

Anytime someone watching your Periscope broadcast shares it with their followers, your URL is shared because it's part of the title. (Notice the hashtag, too, to build brand recognition for my #SweetTeaScopes.)

IN YOUR NEWSLETTER: Share links to your latest scopes in your newsletter, and, if you scope on a schedule, let subscribers know when you'll be live next.

EMAIL TO SOCIAL MEDIA

Use your email list to drive traffic to your social media platforms as well.

#1 - Include links to your social media accounts within your newsletter.

You can use the same icons you use on your blog by using HTML in your newsletter.

#2 - Give unsubscribers a chance!

Don't take it personally when people unsubscribe from your list. Instead, give them the opportunity to follow you on social media instead.

Add links to your social media accounts on the unsubscribe notification in your email service provider.

BIG FAT BONUS TIP

Bitly allows you to create custom shortlinks for every platform so you can track where subscribers come from, but you can take it to another level using LeadPages or something similar.

You can even go so far as to offer a platform-exclusive opt-in offer. Here's how all that would work:

  1. Use LeadPages to create a platform-specific landing page for each platform you use regularly.
  2. Turn the URL of each LeadPage into a custom bitly link that you will share on individual platforms. *So, you'll have a LeadPage & bitly link for Facebook, another for Twitter, and so on.
  3. Use that custom bitly link any time you share your newsletter on social media.
  4. New subscribers will be taken to a platform-specific landing page to sign up and receive your opt-in offer.

Now go be amazing and unlock the potential of social media and email!
