Why Facebook Groups are Good for You and Your Business

Working online can be crazy lonely. I will absolutely be the first to tell you that. Sure, you may have a wonderful support system “in real life,” but unless there are people in that support system that are going through or have gone through what you’re going through… well, it just lacks something.

An understanding, really.

Let me give you an example here. My husband has been an amazing support person during the 5 years I’ve worked online. He encourages me to keep going and celebrates my big accomplishments with me. But when I’m struggling with a tech issue or social media scheduling, he gets this glazed over look. Sometimes he’ll say things like “Didn’t you just work on social media yesterday?” {y’all know I laughed hysterically at that one!}

It’s not that he’s NOT being supportive in those cases… it’s that he just doesn’t get it because he’s never experienced it.

And honestly? That was my experience with many of the people in my life. Which made working at home pretty lonely. There was no one to really commiserate with me and people need that!

Luckily, along the way, I found my tribe of people. Women that were walking the same path as me and understood exactly what I was going through. And I understood them too!

And I found them in such an obvious place.

Facebook.

Well, Facebook Groups to be precise.

Zuckerberg knew exactly what he was doing when he decided to bring groups to Facebook. Having groups allows people all over the world to connect over common ground. That’s exactly what I’ve found.

Through groups, I’ve been able to give and receive encouragement. Learn more about my business and it’s path. And I’ve made some amazing friends in the process.

Not to mention the fact that participating in groups online has allowed me to have some amazing opportunities put right into my lap.

Now, like all things, there are some guidelines that make participating in groups more beneficial to you.  I’m not talking a definitive do and don’t list… just guidelines to make your experience better.

Join groups that are relevant to you.

If you’re a blogger that focuses on pet care, a food blogger group isn’t going to work for you. If you’re a handmade business owner, you’re probably not going to want a group that focuses on network marketing or direct sales.

You can find relevant groups just by searching on Facebook! If you can’t find something within their search tool, ask around! Chances are there are people in your network that already are in some amazing groups and would happy to share.

Follow group rules.

Every group has rules. Well, the non chaotic ones do. Make sure that before you even dive into the group that you read them. Maybe even twice. The last thing you want to do is join a fabulous group only to be booted because you’re repeatedly breaking the rules.

Not only can breaking group rules lead you to being removed, it also doesn’t give you the best “image.” You want people to know that you’re the kind of person that pays attention to the details and the rules.

Give before you take.

I think this is just a good rule for life. Give value to others in the group before you ask for something in return. Meaning, help when you can. Answer question. Boost confidence in people that need it.

In other words, be a good friend!

Okay, okay. Those are some general guidelines. Want to know what groups I absolutely love? Cause I’m going to share them anyway!
