How to Make Consistent Money as an Online Business Owner

There are a lot of posts online that talk about the secret to making money while you sleep. Sounds pretty amazing, right? As awesome as it sounds, some of us are just looking to make regular money! It doesn’t even have to happen while we sleep so long as it happens, right?

Friend, I hear that.

Hi, my name is Erin and I’ve been working online for just about five years. During that time I’ve made terrible mistakes, created horrible looking graphics and got sucked into icky networking practices. {like commenting on business pages with a tag to my own page. Eeeek!}

So why am I sharing all of that embarrassing nonsense with you? Because all of those terrible mistakes weren’t in vain. I’ve learned what it takes to keep money coming in no matter what.

Is this post going to tell you how to have your first 6 figure month? No. But I’m going to share a few things I’ve learned that have proven to be true for every business I’ve run. And if you’re wondering, the answer is three. I’ve run three businesses.

Plan Ahead.

Okay, I have a question for you. Remember when Frozen came out? Remember how flooded Etsy and Storenvy were with Elsa related items? Businesses were seeing a rush of sales and then when the fad passed, BAM. No more sales. What seemed like reliable income wasn’t very reliable anymore.

Of course, this isn’t always the case. Some businesses are able to be created during fads and keep that fad alive and well by catering to a specific market. But for many, once that fad is over, the sales rush ends too.

So how do you avoid falling into this rut? Always always always plan ahead. Don’t count on what you're selling right now to always be what’s wanted/needed. Make sure you have a game plan for the future.

Planning ahead also means that you keep keep working towards a goal. And goals often motivate and drive us to reach the next level; whatever that looks like.

Build Relationships.

How many times have you tried to interact with a business only to have them totally and completely disregard you. The first time it’s excusable but the next time? Or how about the time after that? Not so much.

This is because as people, we thrive on connection. We often go back to the places that leaving us with a positive impression and connection is so so important.

In other words, when working with your market, don’t treat them like your market! People don’t always want to feel like another person being sold to. They want to be seen, they want to be heard, and most importantly, they want to be treated with kindness and respect.

Instead, work on building a relationship with your tribe. And think of them that way. The people that you’re trying to market yourself to, the people that are interested in your services or goods, are your tribe. You need to nurture that tribe, provide them with valuable content and interactions. Let them know that you hear them and see them.

Because this builds that connection. And what did we already establish? People return to positive places and good impressions. Your business and the way you interact with your tribe should make them want to return.

Be Consistent.

Oh my gosh, I can’t tell you how important this is. I could have put this first but I wanted to leave this one for last because if you remember nothing else from this post, I want you to remember this.

Consistency. Is. Key.

I’m not kidding.

And there’s a legitimate reason for this!

Let’s come up with a hypothetical situation here. You ordering a pizza. And you’re, like, really really hungry. You just can’t wait to eat much longer or you’ll be put straight into hangry mode. You’ve got two options.

Option one. The pizza place down the street that delivers a pizza within 20 minutes or less.

Option two. The other pizza place that sometimes delivers within 15 minutes but there have been times where you’ve waited by the door for nearly an hour.

Which option are you probably going to go with in this famished state you’re in? Option one.

Because Option one is reliable. You can trust that pizza to be there when you need it. Because that’s the way it’s always been.

Same goes for your business, guys. You may not be delivering pizzas but you’re delivering something to your tribe, whether it’s a product or a service or even information.  By being consistent, you show your tribe that you’re trustworthy and that they can rely on you.

Not only does it improve your business relationships, in many cases, it helps you stay visible. Social media platforms pretty much require you to stay consistent for them to even let you in a person's feed and being in that feed is pretty darn important to your business. Even Google counts on you being consistent with your business. The more you update sites, the easier it will be for search engines to find you.

Pretty awesome, right?

Of course, there are a million other ways for you to keep making money all the time. I mean, you could run separate businesses or even do things like affiliate or ad marketing. But these three things will help keep your business in the spotlight and on people’s minds.

And that’s what it’s all about. The people.

Until next time, have a beautiful day!
