New ConvertKit Features: Do More With Sequences

Back in March of 2016, I made the switch from MailChimp to ConvertKit, and have been really impressed with this email platform. So impressed, in fact, that I've been deep-diving into ConvertKit to learn as much as possible, and a couple months ago, became a certified Convertkit expert.

They continues to improve, releasing new ConvertKit features and updating existing ones to make their platform more functional while still being affordable. (Seriously, plans start at only $29/month and you get ALL THE THINGS as soon as you sign up. And that's my affiliate link, too, but it's cool. You get your first month free when you use it because I'm a certified expert and all...you're welcome.) ConvertKit has recently announced several new updates, so I wanted to break these down for you and give you some usage examples, too.

ConvertKit is a powerful email platform for bloggers and business owners, and continues to improve by releasing new features. As of December 2016, these improvements include advanced settings in sequences and improved reporting. Get all the details from a certified ConvertKit expert.

NEW CONVERTKIT FEATURES

(DECEMBER 2016)

Before we dive into these awesome features & updates, I want to explain what I'm doing here. Yes, you can go to ConvertKit's website to keep up with all the features. ConvertKit does a great job of keeping their users informed on the latest & greatest.

But I get questions ALL THE TIME from my readers and blog community about how things work, if ConvertKit is right for them, and the fact that these features seem cool, but they just don't see how to put them to work for their needs.

So, going forward, when ConvertKit releases these awesome updates, you'll see a blog post about them right here on Sweet Tea, LLC, where I break down each new feature & update in layman's terms and provide you with usage examples so you can see exactly how these things can benefit you. You'll also see the date right up there (see where it says "December 2016"?) so you'll know if you're seeing the most current information.

Got it? Good. Let's get started.

CONVERTKIT SEQUENCES

Sequences are a series of pre-written emails sent out at specific intervals. These are great for courses, sales funnels, welcome series, etc. Here are the latest updates to ConvertKit sequences:

DELAY BY HOURS OR DAYS

Every email in a sequence allows you to set an interval, or delay. Until recently, this delay between emails in a sequence was only designated by number of days. With the latest update, you can now set emails in a sequence to send mere hours apart!

You now have the ability to send emails within hours of one another, depending on the purpose of your sequence. This is a really cool feature for many reasons. Here's how it works:

Start with the settings for your sequence. Be sure you have selected only the days of the week and the time you want your sequence to be sent, and that you have the correct time zone selected.

After you have your settings the way you want them, start building your sequence. It's that easy!

Let's look at a few usage examples:

WEBINARS:

  • Welcome to the webinar: includes details about the webinar and encourages registrants to invite their friends. << set this email to "published" and to send immediately.
  • Webinar Today & 1 Hour Til the Webinar: includes a reminder about the webinar and link to watch it.
  • One Hour Left on the Replay: After the webinar, if you have a limited time replay, create an email in your sequence and set it to send a specific number of hours after you last reminder email.

You can also use this feature for last call emails. Send a few emails on the same day within one sequence with a countdown to the end of a sale or special offer.

SEND EACH EMAIL ON SPECIFIC DAYS OF THE WEEK

Until this update, each email would be sent based on the settings for the overall sequence. This latest update now allows you to change the day of the week for each individual email in a sequence.

You still have your overall settings for the sequence, but now also have the ability to set each individual email in the sequence to be sent only on certain days of the week.

COURSES VIA EMAIL:

This is very handy for courses delivered via email. You can have the initial email set up to be sent immediately when someone registers, then have each lesson be sent on, say, each Wednesday. This ensures each person receives the content on the same day each week, and saves you from having to schedule multiple one-off broadcasts.

LIMITED TIME LAUNCHES

When launching a new product, you can now create your entire sequence, publish the day the cart opens for registration, and send a strategic series of emails on certain days throughout the launch, all the way up until the day registration closes.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTERS

I currently have my weekly newsletters set up as a never-ending sequence, since my content is evergreen. Rather than my subscribers receiving emails at various times throughout the week based on the day they signed up, I can now set each email to send on specific days each week. It feels more like a weekly newsletter because all of my subscribers will now receive a scheduled email on, say, Mondays.

This also helps me plan email content that is not part of that sequence. If I know my subscribers will receive my sequence emails on Mondays, I can plan any time-sensitive emails for other days of the week so as not to bombard their inbox.

COMING SOON: EXCLUDE FROM EMAILS IN SEQUENCE

A yet-to-be-released-at-the-time-of-this-blog-post feature is the ability to exclude tags or segments from individual emails in a sequence.

If you have an educational sales funnel, and someone purchases your product in one of the emails in the sequence, they can stay on your sequence as a whole but be excluded from the hard sell emails. Combine this with the new conditional merge tag feature to further customize your content, and you'll have a killer sales funnel in no time!

Look for this new feature to be available around the end of December 2016.

CONVERTKIT BROADCASTS & GENERAL UPDATES

These updates are across the board in ConvertKit, not specifically related to sequences.

PERSONALIZE CONTENT BASED ON TAGS

Tags in ConvertKit are essentially various characteristics of the people on your list. You can literally have an unlimited number of tags and use them for all kinds of cool things. Now you can even personalize the content within a single email to people based on how they are tagged.

We've had the ability to personalize the greeting of each email, using our subscribers name if we have it, or a general greeting if we don't. ConvertKit has now added the ability to personalize parts of the email body based on how our subscribers are tagged.

This is my favorite thing ever!

SELL ONLY TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PURCHASED

Let's say you have a high-quality, educational sequence that occasionally advertises your product or service. Let's also say, for the sake of this example, that Susie Subscriber goes through your sequence and purchases your product through a link in Email #4.

Does that mean Susie stops receiving helpful and educational emails? Before this update, the answer was "yes". Now, you can customize the content in your emails. By adding a Conditional Merge Tag, you can add more sales wording to emails in your sequence, but only people who have NOT purchased from you, and are tagged as purchasers, will see it. People who have purchased from you will see something completely different.

FEWER EMAILS, MORE FUNCTIONALITY

When I'm promoting something, and I know I'll be sending more than my usual number of emails as part of the promotion, I make a link trigger to give my subscribers the ability to opt out of the promotional emails but remain on my list.

Before this update, if I wanted to send out a newsletter and also mention my promotion, I would have to create two different broadcasts - one with promotional content and one without, for those who opted out.

Now I can create only one broadcast, and use this conditional merge tag to essentially eliminate anything promotional from people who opted out of that type of content.

UPDATED & MORE FUNCTIONAL BROADCAST REPORTS PAGE

When you visit your individual broadcasts, you may notice the reports page got a facelift, but it also got a lot more functionality in the process.

At a glance, you can see your open and click rates, as well as how many people unsubscribed through that broadcast, and the top links clicking (and how many clicks on each link). But that's not the coolest part:

Let's say you forgot to set up a link trigger before sending out your last broadcast. No worries! From the Reports page for that broadcast, click on the link you wanted to use as a trigger, and you'll see the list of people who clicked on that link.

Now, select everyone in that list, and click "Bulk Actions" to tell ConvertKit what you want to do - tag these subscribers, add them to a sequence, export them, or delete them. Easy!

FILTER BROADCASTS BASED ON STATUS

If you're like me and write a bunch of emails for various things, you'll love this.

When you go to your list of broadcasts, you can now filter by status - draft, processing, queued, or completed. Pretty cool.

I'm hoping they'll add folders to the mix at some point, so we can drop each broadcast into a folder based on tags or segments of our list. (Here's looking at you, ConvertKit!)
