A GUIDE TO SELF-PUBLISHING

  • There are 3 reasons to write a book: credibility, visibility, and money. Jodi breaks down how these are all tied together and help scale your business
  • Benefits of self-publishing:
    • Control the schedule, the process, the money you keep
    • Can be done in a couple months
    • Can do an ebook or printed book, or both
    • Traditional publishing: after contract is signed, 9-12 months until you have a book
    • Self-publishing process:
      • Programs: for writing - Scrivener; all you need is Microsoft Word
      • Just get in there and do the writing.
      • From Word to an actual book or ebook format
      • Kindle does it for you
      • Benefits of bloggers writing books - we know how to promote it
      • Create Space: upload it and it creates an actual print book for you
        • Need ISBN and bar code (myidentifiers.com) - you can stockpile them
        • And you need a different ISBN for different formats (audio, etc.)
        • Create Space offers a free one, but it will be registered to Create Space, not to you
        • Bloggers who want to write a book and don’t know what to write:
          • What am I an expert in?
          • Who is my ideal client/reader?
          • What do I get asked all the time?
          • See what most popular posts are.
          • Do a brain dump
          • Macro & micro brain dump, when one idea inspires others
          • How important is editing?
          • 3 types of editing: big picture/structural; copy editing (grammar, tone, flow of book); proofreading
            • No matter what, do not skip proofreading
            • Exchange services with someone if you can’t afford copy editing AND proofreading, but definitely pay for proofreading, particularly for business books that are meant to establish your authority
            • Find someone who has worked on books similar to yours - FB and Twitter are great places to ask for editing references; NAIWE; editorial freelancers association
            • Promoting the book - think early about how to promote it
              • Websites, podcasts, Twitter chats that might be a good fit
              • A lot of book awareness is not from the bookstore - know where your people are
              • Build your email list b/c those people will be your VIPs
              • Behind the scenes stuff is huge
              • Beta readership - advanced copy of book
              • Affiliates - comb your list for affiliates and get people excited about the book
              • Make it super easy for people to promote - create tweets, offer to write guest posts, etc. Plus, you’re in control of the message
